Resolution
ECG Testing in Sports Physicals
WHEREAS, the number of students in Florida ‘s schools with identified heart related deaths has increased 3.1% since the 2007 school year, exceeding student population increases and resulting in growing health expenses related to serving this
student population; and
WHEREAS, more than half of sports related deaths in children are due to underlying heart disease or other heart related ailments; and
WHEREAS, increasing evidence has linked sudden cardiac death in student athletes to the lack of proper testing for detectable symptoms of heart disease and other heart related aliments; and
WHEREAS, studies show that routine testing of the hearts of young athletes using electrocardiograms to screen for sudden death is reasonable in cost and effective at saving lives; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that Florida PTA and its and its constituent organizations urge and support health education for parents, students, educators and community members that addresses the benefits of cardiac screening and early detection of heart related ailments in student athletes; and be it further
RESOLVED, that Florida PTA and its constituent organizations urge and support actions by the legislature, the Department of Education and school districts that will encourage the use of electrocardiography (ECG) testing/screening of all athletes; and be it further
RESOLVED, that Florida PTA encourage other state PTAs to adopt similar resolutions.
